With the Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing, you can gain a strong foundation in mental health nursing with four units of study to help you build your career. You will develop your understanding of mental ill-health and examine common mental illnesses with a contemporary curriculum designed by mental health nursing experts.

After completing this course, you can deliver mental health nursing practice and produce better patient outcomes. You will also be able to continue your studies with the Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, followed by the Master of Mental Health Nursing, both of which progress you towards Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN) credentialing.

What you will study

Students will be required to complete 48 credit points of core studies to attain the Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have the following:

  • Completed an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Nursing, or equivalent qualification.
  • Registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) or Registered Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) OR equivalent registration with the relevant registering authority for applicants outside of Australia.
  • Evidence that they are employed in a health setting (e.g., employment contract).

Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have completed your studies at another university or institution, you may be eligible to receive credit for skills and past studies. Units can be credited if they are part of the course structure you are applying for. Please note that credits relating to prior VU subjects are automatically granted and no further action is required.

Commonwealth Supported Places

A Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) is where the government pays for part of your unit fees. This is a subsidy, not a loan, so you do not need to repay it. Your remaining fees may also be eligible for FEE-HELP.

HECS-HELP loans are available to CSP students to pay the student contribution amount.

FEE-HELP loans are available to assist eligible full-fee-paying domestic students with the cost of a university course.
